Tarrell Christie, a recent graduate from the Digital Media major in the Department of Communication Studies, has been awarded a Crystal Pillar award for his film FLAVA from the Upper Midwest Emmy Foundation Student Production Awards. The awards, sponsored by the Upper Midwest chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, recognizes excellence in media production for high school & college/university students within the NATAS – Upper Midwest region (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa & western Wisconsin). FLAVA is set in the dystopic city nicknamed "The Bottoms," where regular law enforcement has been replaced by a private military organization and mass advertising is a way of life. Raekwon, the actor behind a popular energy drink mascot named Lil Pooky, is challenged for the messages his character sends to the public. In an attempt to put a positive message behind his character, Raekwon finds that Lil Pooky may be tied into a horrifying conspiracy.
