Junior psychology major Jerrell Bates was just awarded a Newman Civic Fellowship, which is awarded to student leaders across the nation each year. But for the Waterloo native, helping his community isn’t just a professional goal, it’s a personal passion.

Public health students place second in national competition
A team of three UNI students earned second place among 15 teams from 11 states in a public health competition. The group was honored for their work developing a public health plan to address breastfeeding disparities in a rural Louisiana county.

UNI biochemistry alum makes ISU history
Warren Rouse arrived at UNI as a transfer student with big dreams. The biochemistry alum, now at Iowa State University graduate school, recently became the first student in his department ever to win a prestigious NIH fellowship that will fully fund his postdoctoral research.

New scholarship fund helps bridge the gap
Thanks to a $117,000 grant, UNI-CUE — a UNI center that helps minority and nontraditional students reach their educational goals — will for the first time be able to provide direct financial support to college students in their programs through scholarships and “mini-grants” designed to help them continue their education.

Reimagining teaching
UNI alumna Jennifer Stimpson is a chemist and teacher whose vision for the future of STEM education has been recognized by Oprah’s “O” magazine and basketball superstar Michael Jordan’s Fundamentals Grant Program. She’s now working as an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Congressional Fellow in Washington, D.C.

UNI's David Harris named an Athletics Director of the Year
UNI Director of Athletics David Harris has been named an Athletics Director of the Year for 2020-21 by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. He’s one of only four ADs in the country to earn the honor.
