CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa is now accepting applications for its Master of Arts in Science Education program scheduled to begin summer 2019, with an optional spring 2019 jump start. This program integrates theory, application and content, allowing K through 12 teachers to update pedagogy as well as add endorsement areas to their teaching licenses or update content knowledge in their specialty areas.
This master’s program builds a strong foundation in science content knowledge to complement research-based pedagogical practices. Students will learn how to teach science to their students in a way that helps construct their knowledge within an inquiry framework. Students will also have the opportunity to earn credits toward endorsements in earth science, physics, biology and chemistry.
"Classes allow teachers to collaborate with other teachers, from a range of subject areas and backgrounds, which widens their perspectives on science education and opens many doors to fresh, new ideas for their own classrooms," says Dawn Del Carlo, program coordinator.
Courses in this program are offered on Wednesday evenings via interactive video conferencing, in addition to eLearning, a dynamic online platform that will enhance students’ learning experiences and sense of community with classmates. Core and elective courses use a blended approach, with in-person instruction required at least once per course. A required orientation session is scheduled on the UNI campus Saturday, April 6, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The program begins June 2019 using a cohort model in which a group of students completes the core coursework together over a two-year period. To learn more about the program and how to apply, visit distance.uni.edu/science-education.
