Rod Library to host third annual mini comic book convention

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Rod Library at the University of Northern Iowa will host the third annual Mini Comic-Con from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 2.

Activities will include a kid zone, photo booth and trivia to test your knowledge of science and comics. There will also be a Batmobile replica outside the Campanile, a demonstration by the improv group Half Masted and a preview of the 24th annual design and fashion show, featuring garments designed and constructed by students in the Textiles and Apparel major. A variety of artists and panelists will also be at the event.

Deborah Whaley will serve as the Mini Comic-Con's keynote panelist. She will discuss, "Black Women in Sequence: Re-inking Comics, Graphic Novels and Anime," her recent book dealing with African American and multi-ethnic women deployed in television, film, animation, gaming and print representations of comic book and graphic novel characters.

"Comics are playing a big role in our community, and RodCon gives our community a chance to come together to appreciate, discuss and understand the importance of comics in both educational and casual environments. Comics allow us not only a way to relax, but also a different way to hold conversations about politics, culture, current events and more. Adding images to the discussion the way comics do, allows the addition of a new depth of emotion and understanding," said Melissa Gevaert, RodCon planning committee member. "RodCon has been a great opportunity for the Rod Library to participate in campus wide diversity initiatives and provide an excellent outreach opportunity."

The event is free and open to the public. For additional information and a complete schedule of events, visit
