Fred Abraham

When Fred Abraham arrived in Cedar Falls in 1973, he expected to teach at the University of Northern Iowa for just one year. Instead, he found his professional home on campus and went on to influence more than 14,000 students during a decades-long career. His impact was so memorable that students affectionately nicknamed him “F.”

Abraham served as head of UNI’s economics department for 27 years and later led the economics and finance department in the final years of his career.

Known for his ability to make complex ideas approachable, Abraham turned challenging economic concepts into lessons students could understand and remember. His introductory macroeconomics course became a foundational experience for many, recalled years later with both respect and appreciation.

He described himself “not as a lecturer, but as a catalyst to the educational process.” 

His students agreed.

“I was a big fan of F Dot Abraham (A-B pause, R-A pause, H-A pause, M… this.is.very.important),” wrote a former student in a 2012 Facebook post.

During his tenure, the economics department expanded its curriculum to include specialized tracks aligned with students’ career goals. It also established numerous student scholarships, organized economics competitions for Iowa high school students and created multiple endowed faculty positions.

“Fred embodies the spirit and values of UNI through his legacy of teaching, mentorship and service. His deep commitment to student learning was matched by a vision for building rigorous and relevant academic programs,” said former student, Tyler Hospodarsky, in his nomination of Mr. Abraham. “He empowered students not just with knowledge, but with confidence to think critically and apply economic reasoning well beyond their college years.”

Beyond the classroom, Abraham was a strong advocate for economic education and civic engagement. He regularly contributes to local newspapers, speaks at community events and provides media commentary, sharing his expertise with the broader public.

Abraham also helped co-found the Iowa Baseball League in the 1990s, which provided competitive local baseball for more than 3,000 children. He served for 13 years on the Cedar Falls Parks and Recreation Commission, contributing to projects such as the Falls Aquatic Center and the restoration of the Island Park Beach House. 

He has also been a long-time leader within the Cedar Falls Lions Club, which he continues to serve on today.

“His decades of local service — supporting youth recreation, civic infrastructure and public discourse — reflect a belief in using one’s expertise to build a better community,” said Hospodarsky. “F. is the embodiment of the UNI Panther Spirit.”
