Turning a family business into a global golf manufacturer
Through strong leadership and dedication to family legacy, Pete Voorhees has grown his family’s business into a leading force spanning six continents.
A 1969 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in accounting, Voorhees went on to lead one of the golf industry’s most influential companies. As a third-generation leader of Standard Golf, he helped transform a regional operation into a global enterprise, with 250 distributors around the world.
Voorhees joined Standard Golf in 1975 as chief financial officer and became president in 1982, beginning a 40-year tenure. Under his leadership, Standard Golf grew into a leading manufacturer and distributor of golf course accessories. The company’s equipment — used in course maintenance, setup and practice facilities — has become standard across much of the golf industry.
In 2018, he led the transition to a 100% employee-owned structure through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, designed to give employees a direct stake in the company’s future. He now serves as chairman of the board, continuing to advise the next generation of leadership.
Beyond his role at Standard Golf, Voorhees has kept close ties to UNI.
His involvement began early when he served on the UNI Foundation Board of Trustees in 1968. Over the years, he has also supported the university’s accounting program, UNI Athletics and the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.
