UNI alum’s Butter Cow headed to the Smithsonian
One UNI family’s artwork — the iconic Iowa State Fair Butter Cow — is going all the way to the Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.
UNI alum Sarah Pratt has played a role in sculpting the Butter Cow for many years, first as an apprentice and now as the lead sculptor for nearly two decades. Her twin daughters Hannah and Grace, who are both seniors at UNI, sculpt right alongside her.
This year, in addition to sculpting the State Fair butter cow and its Toy Story companions, the family sculpted a replica cow for the Smithsonian’s year-long exhibit “State Fairs: Growing American Craft.”
“I never dreamed that I'd have anything exhibited at a museum,” said Sarah Pratt. “So when the Smithsonian invited us to come and be part of their State Fairs: Growing American Craft exhibit with our butter cow, it was jaw-dropping. They had to explain it a few times before it sank in.”
Before sculpting the Smithsonian’s Butter Cow, Sarah took her daughters to an Iowa dairy farm to immerse themselves in the habitat of their art subjects, prompting fresh inspiration.
“We did some extra special details, tried some new techniques, which is always fun, and had a great time,” said Sarah.
After putting the finishing touches on the Butter Cow replica, the family was able to preview the exhibit.
“I'm excited for Hannah and Grace, as they go into their senior year at UNI, and they are getting prepared to take their next journey in the world,” said Sarah. “This is how they get to start that year, by having visited and exhibiting at the Smithsonian in DC!”
The exhibit will open to the public Aug. 22, shortly after the Iowa State Fair’s conclusion.
