5 things to know about UNI’s Neighboring State Rate

Just approved by the Iowa Board of Regents, the University of Northern Iowa is offering in-state tuition to new undergraduate students from all six states bordering Iowa beginning this fall. Here are a few things to know about UNI’s Neighboring State Rate, and why the University of Northern Iowa is a great choice to pursue your career goals.
1. It makes UNI even more affordable
The University of Northern Iowa is already the most affordable public university in the state, and UNI alumni enjoy lower student debt compared to their state and national peers. By offering in-state tuition to new undergraduate students, becoming a Panther just became an even better decision!
2. You’ll enjoy a full college experience on a smaller campus
At UNI, you’re not just another face in the crowd. Our students enjoy 1-on-1 collaboration with faculty and staff and our overall student-to-faculty ratio is 15 to 1. Even better, our campus is totally walkable - you can get to nearly anywhere on campus in 15 minutes or less!
3. Signature programs and hands-on experiences
The University of Northern Iowa is well-known for preparing tomorrow’s teachers - with more than 20 teaching majors and a broad range of high-demand minors and endorsements. If you’re made to teach, UNI is the place to be.
UNI is also home to the Wilson College of Business, which is nationally recognized for quality and value. Our business majors have a number of internship opportunities leading students to have their first job in place before they even graduate.
At UNI, the future of health care is also in motion. Students can explore a wide range of health-related fields, including our Bachelor of Science in Nursing major - one of the newest and in-demand additions to UNI’s health programs.
UNI has also launched several new engineering degrees, housed in a recently renovated state-of-the-art facility, offering students hands-on experiences in advanced labs designed for real-world innovation.
If you’re undecided - we have an exploratory program to help you truly find your passion.
4. It’s an opportunity to re-invent yourself
College is the perfect time to come out of your shell, meet new people and try new things. While you can do this anywhere, you’ll be especially motivated to do it at an out-of-state institution.
“My big reason for wanting to get out of Minnesota was I wanted a fresh start,” said Megan May, a UNI grad from Minnesota who earned her degree in construction management. “I wanted to go to a school where nobody knew my name. That's exactly what I got.”
5. It’s a beautiful campus, and the Cedar Valley is awesome
Just ask our alumni – there’s no better time to be on the UNI campus than during the spring bloom and autumn colors. Grab a coffee or a bite to eat at many locally owned shops within walking distance on College Hill or downtown Main Street. The Cedar Valley is also great for exploring with more than 130 miles of scenic trails and one of the best loop systems in the region.
