Summer is rapidly coming to close, and we’re excited to welcome our Panthers back to campus. 

UNI, the City of Cedar Falls and others in the community have been working diligently to make improvements across campus to make your experience even better this fall. While much of that work is already complete, please note that some projects are still ongoing. 

Here are some of the most notable areas impacted as we prepare to begin the 2026 fall semester: 

Highway 20/Hudson Road interchange

• The Iowa DOT is continuing its reconstruction of Highway 20 in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area. View this area on Google Maps.
• Drivers coming from the east, including Dubuque and Cedar Rapids: Beginning Saturday, August 15, use Exit 225 to access Cedar Falls and the UNI campus area via Highway 58.  Exit 224 at Hudson Road is currently closed to westbound traffic.
• Drivers coming from the west, including Des Moines, Fort Dodge, Omaha and Sioux City: Exit 224 at Hudson Road remains open and can be used to approach campus. 

Road construction on/near campus & pedestrian detours

• Construction is underway on the south side of campus near the Applied Engineering Building.
• Ohio Street is closed for construction between University Avenue and West 27th Street.
• The portion of Campus Street south of University Avenue between the Applied Engineering Building and Jennings Drive is closed.
• The Student Health Center and its parking lot remain accessible. Drivers should approach taking West 23rd Street off of Hudson Road. West 23rd Street is closed for reconstruction from Lawther Hall heading east to Campus Street. 
• West 22nd Street between Merner Avenue and College Street is closed for reconstruction.
• Signage will direct foot traffic to alternate routes around construction areas.
• View road closures near campus here. 

Other impacted areas for pedestrians

• Pedestrian access between Strayer Wood Theatre and Russell Hall is restricted.
• Construction will limit pedestrian access to the Human Performance Center on both east and west entrances.

All impacted locations are subject to change based on anticipated completion dates and other factors.
