The UNI volleyball team heads into the NCAA tournament this week against the Miami Hurricanes. A packed house showed up at Pepper’s Sports Grill in Cedar Falls to rally with the Panther women as they learned who they would meet in the opening round.
If you’re not a fan already, here are a few reasons why it’s a great time to follow the Panthers!
- The Panthers enter the NCAA tournament as back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference champs. This isn’t the first time the Panthers have won repeat championships — the program won three straight from 2009-2011.
- UNI was undefeated in the MVC this year, and is in the midst of a 21-match winning streak. It is the longest streak of consecutive wins for the purple and gold since winning 24 straight in 2011 and fifth-longest stretch in the Bobbi Petersen era. UNI Volleyball’s win over Southern Illinois on Nov. 21 marked its 1,200th win as a program.
- Coach Bobbi Petersen is the MVC Coach of the Year for the eighth time, a conference record. In addition to leading the Panthers for 24 years, she might be the best player in UNI history.
- The Panthers get it done off the court too - senior outside hitter Emily Holterhaus is the Missouri Valley Conference’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The Panthers, seeded eighth in the Wisconsin quarter of the bracket, will battle the Hurricanes at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30 at the University of Wisconsin's UW Fieldhouse in Madison. With a win in the first round, the Panthers would play the winner of Wisconsin and Jackson State on Friday at 7 p.m.
