Summer construction projects ready to kick off at UNI
Summer construction projects ready to kick off at UNI
As students head home for summer break, the University of Northern Iowa shifts into its busiest season for construction and improvement projects. Several important projects will get underway following UNI’s spring commencement on May 17.
The City of Cedar Falls is scheduled to begin the reconstruction of West 23rd Street beginning on May 19. Phase 1 of this project will impact the stretch of West 23rd Street between Hudson Road and Indiana Street until anticipated completion in August. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured along a designated route from the Hudson Road tunnel to Campus Street. Additionally, the Latham Field parking lot (west of Schindler) and Campbell Hall B and CP parking lots will be closed during construction which will also impact parking for the Towers Complex. These parking lots are anticipated to be reopened two weeks prior to the start of the fall semester.
Phase 2 of the West 23rd Street reconstruction will begin in August after move-in is complete and classes have started. This will impact the stretch of road between Indiana Street and the Student Health Center parking lot. That parking lot will be closed for the duration of the fall semester. Phase 3 of the project is slated to begin in May 2026.
Students, faculty and staff should also note that the pedestrian tunnel under University Avenue connecting the main campus to facilities and parking south of University Avenue will be closed for approximately a month beginning on June 15.
Despite the construction, we are excited to continue welcoming visitors to campus for events such as Panther Visit Days and Orientation. Event planning staff are aware of the upcoming work and are already making accommodations to ensure a positive experience for all guests.
Signage will be posted to guide campus visitors around the construction work.
In addition to roadwork, several campus projects will continue or begin this summer:
- Renovations inside the UNI-Dome, part of the second phase of a major project, will continue. Fans can look forward to a new seating arrangement when Panther football kicks off this fall. You can watch the reseating project progress in real-time through a livestream available here.
- Restoration work at the Campanile is underway, and we look forward to celebrating the opening of the new Campanile Plaza this fall.
