UNI announces first awards for sesquicentennial coursework and project stipends
The University of Northern Iowa is pleased to announce the first recipients of stipend awards for coursework and projects supporting the university’s upcoming 150th anniversary celebration. These awards include a $750 stipend and an expense budget to develop special classes or course projects that align with the celebration goals.
Following the initial application deadline of December 1, the following initiatives have been selected for funding:
Art 4300 • Critical Issues in Contemporary Art (Jeff Byrd, Department of Art)
Students will assist in preparing an exhibition for the UNI Gallery of Art celebrating the 25th year of the Vertigo Performance Art Series.
Engineering 4500 • Senior Design (Lisa Riedle, Department of Applied Engineering & Technical Management)
Students will engage in designing and producing Sesquicentennial-oriented commemorative materials to demonstrate student skills and provide a future keepsake.
English 4/5720 Studies in Creative Writing: Hearst, Van Duyn, and Clampitt (Jeremy Schraffenberger, Department of Languages & Literatures)
Students will read the work of three Iowa poets—James Hearst, Mona Van Duyn, and Amy Clampitt—emphasizing connections to UNI, and produce an anthology of poetry written in response to their work that will be published and made publicly available.
Family Services 3/5150 • Families and Aging (Melinda Heinz, Department of Family, Aging, & Counseling)
Students will conduct oral history interviews with older adult alumni about their life histories, including their time at UNI, allowing participants (i.e., alumni) to tell their own story in their own words.
Geography 1310 • Digital Earth (Bingqing Liang, Department of Geography)
Students working on a class project will create a 360-degree indoor virtual tour of selected significant geographical locations (e.g., landmarks, facilities, and historical buildings) within the University of Northern Iowa.
History 4/5200 • History of Iowa (Brian Rumsey, Department of History)
Students will turn research projects on the history of UNI into a podcast series that will be available to the public.
Stipend applications continue to be accepted on a rolling basis. Please see the application form for specific details about this opportunity. Feel free to contact Jim O’Loughlin with any questions you may have.
