UNI Center for Civic Education to host naturalization ceremony on April 18

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa will once again welcome new U.S. citizens as the UNI Center for Civic Education sponsors a naturalization ceremony on Friday, April 18, at 1 p.m. in the Maucker Union Ballrooms.
This marks the return of a cherished tradition at UNI, as the university previously hosted naturalization ceremonies annually. The last ceremony was held in 2019 before the event was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are honored to once again host this significant event and provide a space where individuals from diverse backgrounds can celebrate this milestone in their journey to U.S. citizenship,” said Scott Peters, department head and professor of political science. “It’s a powerful reminder of the role universities play in civic engagement and community-building.”
The ceremony, conducted by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, will welcome new citizens from around the world. The event is open to the public, and community members are encouraged to attend and witness this important moment in the lives of those taking the Oath of Allegiance.
The Center for Civic Education at the University of Northern Iowa enhances civic education among university students, pre-K-12 students and teachers, and the broader public by researching, developing and implementing effective civic learning strategies and encouraging respectful dialogue across differences. The center promotes the values of free speech, civic leadership, public service and citizenship.
