UNI Veggie Vouchers Program Surpasses Goal
The University of Northern Iowa’s Veggie Vouchers Program has wrapped up its 2025 fundraising campaign, raising $10,180 and surpassing its $10,000 goal. The milestone was made possible by the generosity of 20 donors whose contributions will directly support food access and local agriculture in the Cedar Valley.
The Veggie Vouchers Program, coordinated by UNI’s Center for Energy and Environmental Education (CEEE) Local Food Program, distributes $5 vouchers for fresh fruits and vegetables to individuals and families in need. These vouchers are redeemable at local farmers markets and farm stands, supporting both vulnerable populations and small-scale farmers.

2024 Program Highlights
- $20,230 in vouchers were redeemed in 2024
- 1,380 individuals from 681 households received vouchers
- 29 local farms participated in the program
- 97% of households rated their experience as positive or very positive
- 29% of household members served were minors and 23% were seniors age 60 and older
- Since 2016, the program has facilitated more than $118,100 in voucher redemptions
These numbers reflect the program’s dual impact: improving access to nutritious food for underserved residents and strengthening the local food economy.
“This program is about more than just food — it’s about dignity, health and community,” said Crystal Schmitz, community program coordinator at Black Hawk County Public Health. “These vouchers are a lifeline for many.”
