CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Family Business Center will offer a conversation about “Balancing a Legacy Family Business and a Next Gen's New Venture” on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, at 8 a.m. Central Standard Time via Zoom. Matthew Cathy, the youngest member of the third generation in the Cathy family, will share his experience growing up in the famous family of Chick-fil-A and now leading his own venture, Clayton Fixture, which creates cabinets and fixtures for the restaurant industry.

“As families start succeeding into their third or fourth generations, sometimes there isn’t an obvious role for them in the business,” said Jayne Kielman, business development manager at the UNI Family Business Center. “Families like Chick-fil-A are forward-thinkers for encouraging their next generation to pursue their passions while remaining involved in the legacy business in a meaningful way.”

Despite running his own successful business, Cathy is one of the most engaged Chick-fil-A ambassadors. He attends and facilitates events for team members, operators and CFA staff, and he serves and contributes to the Family Council.

“I’m excited to share my story and a little about the secret sauce behind what makes Chick-fil-A special,” said Cathy.
