UNI art gallery to present “Convergence and Creation of Design: The Elena Diane Curris Biennial Design Exhibition”The University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art will present “Convergence and Creation of Design: The Elena Diane Curris Biennial Design Exhibition," which will open October 10 and remain on display through November 9.

The gallery will host an opening reception at 6 p.m. on October 12 following a public lecture by James Ewald, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.

Ewald’s lecture titled “Triple Double: Independent Publishing, Sensory Experiences, and Visual Narratives” will take place at UNI’s Kamerick Art Building, room 111.

This is the third iteration of the exhibit, which was named after Elena Diane Curris (1977-2015), daughter of former university president Constantine (Deno) Curris and Jo Hern Curris. The exhibit was first presented in the fall of 2018.

Elena lived in Cedar Falls and attended the UNI Price Laboratory School during the years her father was university president. She was deeply interested in design.

The long-term support for this series is made possible by a generous endowment from Elena’s family and is supplemented by additional contributions from friends and others who wish to promote the excellence of graphic design education at UNI.

Additional exhibitors include: Jessica Barness, UNI alumna and associate professor in the School of Visual Communication Design at Kent State University; Soo Hostetler, UNI associate professor of art in graphic design; Riva Nayaju, UNI assistant professor of art in graphic design; and Dr. Sang-Duck Seo, professor in graphic design and media at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas.

All events are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or by appointment. Wearing a mask and social-distancing while in the gallery are recommended.

The gallery is located on the main floor of UNI’s Kamerick Art Building South.
