CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – For its second production of the 2024-25 season, TheatreUNI will present William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest'' directed by Matthew James Weedman. Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7-9, and Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. There will also be two school matinee showings Nov. 7 and 8 at 2 p.m. 

All performances will take place in the Strayer-Wood Theatre on the University of Northern Iowa campus.

The Tempest is a story about revenge, shipwrecks, magical spirits, young love, conniving brothers, forgiveness, redemption and change. Set on a remote and magical island where seemingly anything can happen and which is full of “sounds and sweet airs that give delight and hurt not,” this is one of Shakespeare’s most mature and deeply felt works. It features monsters and drunken clowns and contains language both silly and lyrical. TheatreUNI’s production will feature magic and live music and will focus on making the text accessible to all audiences.

Matthew James Weedman, associate professor of theatre, will return to direct this piece of classic Shakespearean work, with scenic design by Mark Parrott, associate professor of theatre. Costume design is by associate professor of theatre Amy S. Rohrberg. Ron Koinzon, TheatreUNI’s technical director, is in charge of lighting design. The production’s stage manager is Brandy Burge.

Tickets start at $26 and are available at unitix.uni.edu. Tickets can also be purchased at the box office inside the Strayer-Wood Theatre. Admission is free for UNI students, and the production will offer free student matinees for school groups.
