Every year, educational institutions, businesses, communities and organizations worldwide celebrate the global impact of international education, cross-cultural exchange and the importance of fostering awareness in local communities. This year, the University of Northern Iowa will join the global International Education Week (IEW) celebration from Nov.18 to Nov. 22. Organized by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, IEW is a time to highlight the significance of global learning, encourage cultural exchange and recognize the value of preparing students to become global citizens, leaders and professionals inside and outside the classroom.

At UNI, IEW is a pivotal opportunity to celebrate the university’s international community and to showcase the university’s efforts in creating a more globally-minded student body. With many events, programs and activities, UNI is proud to partner with offices, departments and community groups across the Cedar Valley to offer an engaging week of cultural education and fun. The Office of International Engagement (OIE) leads the celebration, bringing together students, faculty, staff and the community to reflect on the importance of international education and the interconnectedness of today’s world.

International education is an essential driver of change, helping to broaden perspectives and create a greater understanding of global issues. By engaging with people from different cultures, ethnic groups, religions and backgrounds, students and faculty can expand their knowledge. Currently, UNI enrolls students from 67 different countries and looks forward to showcasing the richness of their diverse cultures, traditions and perspectives.

Various exciting activities are scheduled throughout the week. On Monday, Nov. 18, the celebration starts with a Japan Highlight: Yukata and Kimono Photobooth from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Maucker Union, where participants can try traditional Japanese clothing and enjoy Japanese snacks. Later in the day, the International Scholar Presentation will feature Luthando Mpho Molefe, who will present his research on the transformative power of service-learning and academic engagement. From 5 to 6 p.m., the Japan Highlight: Tea Ceremony and Snacks will take place in Maucker Union Room 109P, where attendees can learn about the Japanese tea ceremony and sample traditional matcha and sweets. Finally, we end the night with an AfroBeats event in collaboration with the Campus Activities Board (CAB), which promises to be a party you’ll never forget!

On Tuesday, Nov. 19, UNI will host several cultural and academic events. From 3 to 4 p.m., students can learn about the prestigious Fulbright Program at an information session, followed by the Taste of Culture event from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Maucker Union Ballrooms, where a diverse range of performances, food, and cultural exhibits will be on display. Brazilian drum performances, Mariachi Band music and Chinese traditional dance will all add to the artistic excitement of the day. Finally, join the campus community for Passport Day on Wednesday, Nov. 20, hosted by the Study Abroad Center, where students can learn more about studying abroad and get assistance with passport applications.

With so many opportunities to engage with different cultures and perspectives, International Education Week offers a perfect chance for UNI students and the local community to reflect on the power of global learning and connection. Whether sampling international cuisine, attending a cultural performance or learning about study abroad opportunities, IEW 2024 promises something for everyone.

We challenge you to take part in this week of celebration and growth. Step out of your comfort zone, meet someone from a different country or culture, and engage in a conversation that broadens your understanding of the world. Take this opportunity to reflect on your “international journey” and how your experiences with others have shaped you into a more well-rounded global citizen.
