CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The University of Northern Iowa is now accepting applications for a redesigned Master of Arts (MA) in History program, which features an entirely online format and updated curriculum tailored for educators and other professionals. Previously offered as a traditional in-person program, the new online format provides greater flexibility for working professionals to enhance their careers while balancing a busy lifestyle.

With a focus on practical and innovative approaches, UNI’s Master’s in History equips educators with advanced content knowledge and instructional strategies to enrich their classrooms. The program also prepares graduates for diverse career paths including positions in law, government agencies, journalism, publishing, archives and employment at museums and historical sites. The curriculum is self-paced, allowing students to complete the program in less than two years, or at a pace that fits their individualized needs.

“Taught by UNI’s highly regarded history faculty, students will gain research and investigative skills to foster a thoughtful and ongoing study of history and its dissemination,” said Program Coordinator and Professor of History Kenneth Atkinson. “Our courses are flexible, self-paced and delivered within traditional fall and spring semesters as well as over winter and summer terms, and offer an advanced mastery of the basic methods of historical interpretation.”

The new MA in history program meets the qualifications for current educators to teach high school concurrent enrollment program history classes, and students will be connected with established professionals in the field to deepen their content knowledge and enrich their teaching practice.

Individuals interested in the program can learn more by registering for an evening webinar on February 10 or March 25. To register visit bit.ly/History-MA. The program is now open for August 2025 enrollment and will admit students each semester.

Scholarships are available from UNI's Department of History and Online & Distance Education for qualified students.
