UNI 150: People you should know

From the Campanile to the Christmas Variety Show, Bob Byrnes shaped UNI traditions

Bob Byrnes. When Bob Byrnes first arrived at the University of Northern Iowa in 1967 as a freshman, few could have predicted that his name would be associated with two of the university’s most beloved traditions — the sound of the Campanile and the spirit of the Varsity Men’s Glee Club.

Byrnes’s connection to the Campanile began as a student, when UNI’s first carillonneur, John Steffa, introduced him to the art of playing the carillon. What started as lessons grew into a lifelong passion.

Just a year after graduating in 1971, Byrnes took over the role of university carillonneur, a position he would hold for more than three decades. Reporters from campus and local outlets often sought him out, fascinated by both the unique instrument and Byrnes’ devotion to play it.

Over time, he gained recognition nationally and internationally, competing in carillon competitions and sharing UNI’s bell music with audiences beyond Cedar Falls. In June 1980, he hosted the Congress of the Guild of Carillonneurs on UNI’s campus, bringing together experts from around the world.

Byrnes’ contributions didn’t stop at the Campanile. In 1974, he became the director of the UNI Varsity Men’s Glee Club, a role that would expand his impact on campus culture even further. Under his leadership, the Glee Club flourished, developing traditions that continue to this day.

In 1978, he launched the annual Christmas Variety Show, a production that quickly became a beloved holiday favorite for the community still enjoyed to this day. Two years later, he took the ensemble abroad to Germany, marking the first time a UNI ensemble performed in Europe and laid the foundation for a Glee Club tradition of travel.

As part of UNI Sesquicentennial Celebration launch events, the Robert Byrnes Carillon Playing Room was dedicated on campus on October 3, 2025. A monument with Byrnes’ picture can be found outside the iconic campus landmark of the Campanile.
