Irene Eaton: "Ma Commons" knew every name and face on campus

Irene Eaton, often referred to as “Ma Commons” was everyone’s favorite hostess at the State College of Iowa. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1921 with degrees in history and government. In 1937, she started her 35 years of service to ITSC and its students.
Eaton was the evening hostess at the Commons, which at the time was the social center of campus. She greeted students, managed property and supervised students. Once a week, students and staff held a variety show on the Commons stage, where Eaton would manage curtains and lights backstage.
She earned the name “Ma Commons” in the late 1930s when the Commons had received new furniture. Eaton insisted students do not tip chairs or slouch, which inspired good-natured students.
Eaton received an Alumni Service Award for her years of service in 1964. She was even named “Most Favorite Girl” on campus by the Men’s Union in 1966. Given each year to a female student who was well known or liked, it was uncommon for a staff member to win the award, making her particularly special.
Knowing the names
and faces of just about everyone at the school, she was easily a fan favorite amongst the students. Not only did she win “Most Favorite Girl” on campus, but she also became an honorary member of the l-Club for athletic letter-winners in 1967.
Eaton also enjoyed the dances that were held every two weeks. In a 1966 issue of “The College Eye,” Eaton says, “I couldn’t be this happy in somebody else’s college.”
After her retirement in 1972, Eaton moved to Guam to live with her son and his family. She spent her time as the family cook and strived to stay as busy as she was at UNI.
Eaton was the Grand Marshal for the UNI Homecoming Parade of 1981.
