Gaylon "Doc" Halverson

The success of the University of Northern Iowa’s accounting program didn’t happen by chance. Behind its national reputation and generations of accomplished alumni is the vision of one professor who believed students should be prepared not just to earn a degree, but to excel in their profession.

For more than four decades, Gaylon “Doc” Halverson helped shape that vision by raising academic standards, mentoring thousands of students, and building a culture of excellence that continues to define UNI’s accounting program. 

Halverson’s relationship with UNI began as a student. After earning his master’s degree in business education in 1963, he dedicated his career to the institution, ultimately transforming the future of accounting at UNI.

As an accounting professor and later department head, Halverson challenged both students and faculty to pursue excellence. Under his leadership, the department made a bold decision to use the Certified Public Accountant exam as the benchmark for curriculum design. By aligning coursework with the highest standards, the department strengthened its academic rigor and ensured graduates entered the workforce exceptionally well-prepared. 

Former student and UNI Foundation Trustee Mark Oman believes Halverson’s greatest contribution is reflected in the generations of students and faculty he influenced.

“One of the gems has been the Accounting Department. We’re a nationally recognized accounting program, and I think Gaylon Halverson was one of the bedrock upon which that success was built.”

For countless students, Halverson was more than an accomplished educator. He was a mentor who recognized potential, challenged students to reach higher and inspired lifelong success.

“Gaylon was instrumental in making accounting and auditing a viable, challenging and rewarding profession for me,” said former student Ken Askelson in his nomination. “He was a dedicated professor and department head.”

That commitment to students extended well beyond the College of Business. 

Halverson served as faculty advisor for the Delta Upsilon fraternity, spent more than three decades as a member of UNI’s football statistical crew and became one of the university’s most loyal supporters of Panther Athletics.

Nowhere is that dedication more visible than on the softball diamond.

Each year, six teams compete in the annual UNI Softball Gaylon Halverson Classic, a three-day tournament bearing his name. The honor reflects much more than his presence in the stands. Over the years, Halverson has become an integral part of the program, supporting student-athletes academically, financially and personally.

UNI softball head coach Ryan Jacobs describes Halverson as family.

“It is rare to find individuals who have dedicated so much of their life to the University of Northern Iowa, which makes Doc Halverson one of a kind,” he said.

His impact has also been recognized through investments in future generations. In 2003, alumni established the Gaylon Halverson Professorship in Accounting to honor his influence on the department. Three years later, the Gaylon L. Halverson Women’s Basketball Endowed Scholarship was created to support student-athletes.

In recognition of a lifetime devoted to the university, Halverson received the 2022 UNI President’s Distinguished Award. 

Yet Halverson’s legacy cannot be measured solely by awards, scholarships or national rankings. It lives in every graduate who entered the accounting profession prepared to succeed, in the faculty who continue to uphold standards he established, in the student-athletes he encouraged and the university he faithfully served for decades. 

“Gaylon embodies the spirit and values of UNI through his unwavering dedication to students' success, commitment to academic excellence and belief in the transformative power of education,” said former student Tyler Hospodarsky. “He not only taught accounting — but shaped the future, built reputations and created a legacy that continues to inspire faculty and students alike.”
