Commemorative program moves indoors to Maucker Union Ballrooms

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa will formally celebrate its 150th anniversary with a commemorative program at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, in the Maucker Union Ballrooms.

The event was originally scheduled for Commons Plaza but has moved indoors due to weather considerations. The program is open to the public.

The celebration will honor UNI’s 150-year history and longstanding tradition of public service while also commemorating the 100th anniversary of the UNI Campanile. UNI President Mark Nook and other leaders will deliver remarks.

The program will also include the formal announcement of a new center on the UNI campus that builds upon the university’s commitment to public service.

The Iowa State Normal School opened its doors to 27 students on Sept. 6, 1876, setting the stage for the institution’s growth into the Iowa State Teachers College, the State College of Iowa and, ultimately, the University of Northern Iowa.
