UNI launches School of Public Affairs & Service with April 24 conference; unveils new Crime Scene House

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The University of Northern Iowa will celebrate the launch of its new School of Public Affairs & Service with a public conference on Friday, April 24, bringing together leaders working across local, state and federal agencies to highlight how criminology and political science connect to real-world public service.
The event will feature accomplished UNI alumni and public service professionals representing careers in municipal law enforcement leadership, state and federal criminal investigations, intelligence analysis, public safety, homeland security and national defense. Together, they offer students a broad view of how criminology and political science degrees translate into impactful roles across public service sectors.
A highlight of the conference will be tours of UNI’s newly completed Crime Scene House and applied research spaces, where criminology students will be able to practice investigative methods, evidence documentation, scene analysis and interdisciplinary problem-solving in realistic settings that connect classroom learning to professional practice.
“The Crime Scene House gives students the opportunity to learn in environments that mirror the complexity of real investigations, helping them build the analytical, ethical and collaborative skills required in today’s justice and public service professions,” said Scott Peters, director of the School of Public Affairs and Service.
The conference will conclude with small-group conversations and a reception featuring student research displays, internships and program spotlights, and networking opportunities to help students explore career pathways.
The University of Northern Iowa’s School of Public Affairs & Service unites criminology and political science to prepare students for public service careers across government, justice systems, policy organizations and community partnerships, grounded in applied learning, ethical leadership and evidence-informed decision-making.
The conference will be held Friday, April 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Sabin Hall 002, followed by a reception from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Sabin Atrium.
