UNI political science professor Scott Peters recently appeared on Iowa Press to discuss the urgent need for improved civics education in Iowa and across the country.

“Citizenship is not something that just comes naturally,” Peters said. “Just like any workplace skill, citizenship skills get better with practice—and we need to make sure we’re giving students an opportunity to do that.”

Peters also highlighted UNI’s leadership in civic education, including plans for the upcoming Center for Civic Education. “At UNI, we’ve had a team of faculty working on civic education for about 4–5 years now,” he noted. “We’re developing curriculum, hosting public engagement opportunities, and supporting K–12 efforts statewide.”
