UNI to host 2026 “Halloween House” for children and families

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa's American Chemical Society student chapter, in collaboration with students from the biology, physics, earth science and science education departments, will host their annual "Halloween House" from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23 on the second floor of McCollum Science Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Students will be performing Halloween-themed science demonstrations and supervising hands-on activities in rooms such as "Witches’ Lair," "Tesla’s Revenge” and “Creepy Caves”. The hands-on activities are intended for children, and costumes are encouraged. Children of all ages and the whole family will find the science demonstrations entertaining and informative.

“Halloween House is where spooky fun meets scientific discovery,” said Brianna Williams, co-president of the American Chemical Society student chapter at UNI. “From Devil’s Den to Witches’ Lair and many more demonstration-themed rooms, this free community event offers hands-on science adventures and Halloween excitement for all ages.”

“Our students really enjoy showing the children and other visitors how science is interesting and explaining to them the science behind these fun demonstrations and activities,” said Colin Weeks, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

The Halloween House is organized by the UNI Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society, the UNI Physics Club, the Gamma Sigma Chapter of The Society of Sigma Gamma Epsilon, UNI Pre-Med Club and the UNI National Science Teaching Association. The event encompasses STEM activities.
