Rapper Flavor Flav boosts fundraiser for UNI Paralympian’s family
Flavor Flav has been an unlikely star of the 2024 Olympic games. More widely known for his career in the rap group Public Enemy, and later a celebrity guest on reality television shows such as "The Surreal Life," he’s now making headlines as the team sponsor for the American women’s water polo team. He’s also helped make ends meet for Olympic track & field athletes. Now, Flav is throwing his support behind UNI swimmer and paralympian Olivia Chambers.
Traveling to Paris to see the Paralympic Games in person would be a financial strain on most families. When Olivia officially began down the road to Paris, Olivia’s mom, Alison, created a GoFundMe to help cover the Little Rock family’s travel expenses.
On July 30, the GoFundMe got a boost from an unlikely source: Flavor Flav, who tweeted a link to the fundraiser, captioning his post on X, “These kinda stores are CRAZY… and they’re lots of em!”
The Chambers family was met with an outpouring of donations from anonymous sources and strangers, including one from Flavor Flav himself. With just a few weeks left until the start of the Paralympics, the Chambers family is less than $900 away from their fundraising goal of $15,000.
Chambers will compete in the 100-meter butterfly, 100-meter breaststroke, 50-meter freestyle, 400-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley in Paris. UNI is planning a send-off for Olivia on Tuesday, August 6 at SingleSpeed Brewing in Waterloo.
