University of Northern Iowa launches accelerated three-year degree pathways

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa is launching a number of new three-year degree pathways, giving motivated students the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree in just three years. More than 30 majors across the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences are included in the initial launch, spanning high-demand fields such as technology, education, public service, media and human and natural sciences.

The accelerated pathways allow students to complete a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree in three years by following a structured plan of study beginning in their first semester. The new pathways reflect UNI’s commitment to expanding flexible, student-centered academic options that help students achieve their educational and career goals efficiently. As of fall 2025, one in seven UNI students graduates in three years.

“Iowa employers need well-prepared graduates entering the workforce,” said Mary Black, dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences. “These three-year pathways provide motivated students with a clear, structured route to complete their degree more quickly, saving time while maintaining the high-quality education and experiences for which UNI is known.”

By offering accelerated pathways in a wide range of disciplines, UNI is expanding academic options that help students complete their degrees efficiently while preparing them to contribute to Iowa’s communities and economy.

“These pathways help prepare the next generation of professionals who will serve Iowa’s communities,” said Brenda Bass, dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. “Graduates from these programs will be equipped with the knowledge, practical experience and skills needed in fields that strengthen Iowa’s workforce and communities.”

UNI also offers an accelerated Elementary Education “Degree in 3” program through the College of Education, which allows students to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in three years.
