UNI NEWS SERVICES - What is the best national campaign song going into 2020?  According to a group of students at the University of Northern Iowa, it is Mayor Pete Buttigieg's campaign song, “High Hopes,” by Panic! at the Disco.

  The University of Northern Iowa was awarded $40 million in competitive research grants, notching a five-year high in the latest sign of the institution’s strength in scholarship.  It’s also the sixth highest amount UNI received since 1998. The grants awarded in the 2019 fiscal year, which ended last summer, will support 210 projects, the most since 2010.  Those projects include important educational work on Iowa air and water quality as well as training to help local school officials address students’ mental-health needs and prevent violence.

The University of Northern Iowa has appointed a new director to the Iowa Waste Reduction Center, a nationally recognized organization devoted to environmental consulting, assistance, research, training and education.

The University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art will present an art exhibition titled "Paper Giants," which will be open to the public from Monday, Jan. 13 through Saturday, Feb. 29. Paper Giants is an ongoing project between three artists: Ky Anderson, Meg Lipke and Vicki Sher. The artists met in New York where they live and work. They will present a public lecture on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. in KAB 111, and an opening reception will follow. Sponsored in part by the Florence Hartwig Foundation and in association with the UNI Printmaking Labs.

The Yager Exemplary Teaching Recognition Award, established by the Robert and Phyllis Yager Education Fund for Excellence, recently recognized two University of Northern Iowa alumni with awards.

The University of Northern Iowa was recently ranked at the top of the annual Best College Food in Iowa by for the fourth time in five years (2016, 2018, 2019, 2020,) to go along with a national rank of No. 38 out of 1,385 traditional four-year colleges and universities.

For the third time in eight years, the University of Northern Iowa chapter of the Society of Physics Students (SPS) has been recognized as a top-tier institution by the SPS National Office. UNI SPS won an Outstanding Chapter Award, a designation the SPS gives to fewer than 15% of all SPS chapters at colleges and universities in the U.S. and internationally.

  The University of Northern Iowa has created a new position within the Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice as part of an institutional effort to better retain, recruit and serve students of color. The position, retention and mentoring coordinator, was filled by Dacia Carter, who will develop and expand programs designed to mentor and serve underrepresented students on campus.

The University of Northern Iowa’s New Horizons Band will perform a winter concert at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 16, in the Great Hall of the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on the UNI campus.  The band will present a variety of musical selections including a special performance with members of the UNI Trombone studio, and a variety of other band favorites. Join us in the Gallagher lobby, before the concert, with music provided by UNI School of Music students.
