The COVID-19 epidemic has revealed that scammers are still alive and well. They nimbly offered nostrums to prevent or cure the virus to naïve buyers within a few weeks of the epidemic’s explosion. In doing so, the medical quacksters have lived up to their predecessors: let no health scare or new technology go to waste.

In the wake of the disruption in America’s economy, legislators on both sides of the aisle quickly rushed through palliatives for American businesses and workers. In doing so, they may have created situations rife with what economists call “moral hazard,” situations where the affected parties have disincentives to mitigate losses.

UNI business college leads the way at No. 1 Northwestern Mutual office

Thanks to some UNI business college influence, the Waterloo office of Northwestern Mutual had the No. 1 internship program out of all 214 offices across the country from summer 2019 to summer 2020. Two UNI interns led the way. Caleb Meinders (’21) and Kayla Hoeger (’20) were the No. 21 and No. 32 interns (out of 100s) in the 2019-20 Northwestern Mutual internship class, respectively. Zach Fischels (’19), Clay Meinders (’19) and Owen Ward (’19) also played key roles before graduating.

UNI named Top 5 program for CPAs

The University of Northern Iowa’s accounting department ranked third in the nation in preparing students to become certified public accountants, according to a new analytic by Baylor University and UNI professors.

The newly created CPA Success Index estimates students’ progress toward completing all four parts of the CPA exam. The metric found UNI students had an 89% success rate on the notoriously difficult test, just below Texas A&M University (90%) and the University of Missouri-Columbia (95%).
