The year 2021

21 Things Panthers are looking forward to in 2021

With 2020 behind us, 2021 brings the promise of positive change after a year of pandemic. InsideUNI turned to our Instagram followers and professors to learn what they hoped the new year would bring.

Widespread COVID-19 vaccinations, walking across the McLeod Center graduation stage or getting a first apartment were among them.

UNI alumnus Ryan Hannam

A new beginning

Ryan Hannam was living the dream of any Iowa high school football star - playing in the NFL after a successful college football career at the University of Northern Iowa.

Who were the Vikings?

Vikings. Scourge of the sea. Pillaging and plundering their way through Europe. The feats of these legendary warriors have persisted throughout history and into the stories of modern pop culture, from the various appearances of Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the popular television series “Vikings” on the History channel. Recently, Vikings made their way into video games with the release of “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla,”  the latest installment of the popular video game series that follows a Viking raider through a conquest of England.

Sailors in the Panther Patrol aboard the USS Iowa

Saluting the sailors of the USS Iowa

They may be stationed over 1,000 miles away, but USS Iowa sailors in the Panther Patrol got a taste of Iowa for the holidays this year.

Working together, UNI alumni, staff members and a former Iowan helping construct the submarine compiled a gift package of specially designed hats, UNI apparel and homemade cookies and fudge for the 20 Panther Patrol sailors. The Panther Patrol is one of three groups named after state universities (the others are Cyclone and Hawkeye)  that conduct security patrols on the USS Iowa, a U.S. Navy submarine under construction in Connecticut.

COVID-19 vaccine

A COVID-19 vaccine is here. What comes next?

Some hopeful news arrived last week as hospitals across the country began administering the first COVID-19 vaccine approved in the U.S. The Food and Drug Administration is expected to clear another vaccine for emergency use this week. Initial supplies of both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines are limited and are only available to health care workers, but last week was widely viewed as an important step in ending a global pandemic.

UNI alumna Marilyn J. Bohl

UNI alum a computer science pioneer

As a teenager in 1950’s small-town Iowa, Marilyn J. Bohl dreamed of becoming a sports writer. A high school guidance counselor advised against it, saying it wasn’t a viable career for a woman.

“You’re a smart girl Marilyn, you’ll figure it out,” was the counselor’s advice.
