UNI School of Music’s Community Music School to host Camp Musicmania

The University of Northern Iowa Community Music School will present Camp Musicmania at the UNI School of Music, Russell Hall on the UNI campus, from June 14-18, 2021. Camp Musicmania is a multifaceted fine arts camp whose primary purpose is to engage campers in the excitement of exploring music, drama, and art. This year’s camp theme focuses on different ways of creating music.

The younger age division (first through third grades, fall 2021) classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. daily. Cost is $142.50 per student. 

New UNI projection art festival to feature local artists

The first-ever Cedar Valley Illuminate Art and Light Festival will debut this weekend in the College Hill area, a projection art showcase featuring 15 installations from local artists, students and community organizations conceived around a theme of promoting social justice and societal change.

New UNI grant to provide summer job opportunities to at-risk high school students

A new grant awarded to the University of Northern Iowa’s Center for Urban Education will provide 15 summer internship opportunities to local high school students from historically marginalized populations.

The $87,000 grant from Iowa Workforce Development will provide summer employment for youths who are at risk of not graduating, from low-income households or from communities under-represented in the Iowa workforce. Companies participating in the program include UnityPoint Health, MasterBrand Cabinets, Experience Waterloo, Viking Pump and VGM & Associates.

First UNI Provost candidate announced

The University of Northern Iowa has announced the first finalist in the search for its next Provost.

Vandana Kohli, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at California State University, Channel Islands, will interview remotely on Wednesday, April 28 and Thursday, April 29. Dr. Kohli will meet with faculty, staff, students and other members of the campus community. Kohli’s curriculum vitae is available here.

UNI wins community engagement awards

University of Northern Iowa won several awards for community engagement announced Monday.

A UNI professor who created a community project, a sophomore social work major who works with refugees  and several UNI projects were among the five award winners recognized by the Iowa and Minnesota Campus Compact. The awards go  to individuals and organizations whose accomplishments exemplify and celebrate the public purpose at the heart of higher education.

UNI announces program’s first-ever virtual fashion week

The University of Northern Iowa’s Textiles and Apparel Program will hold its first-ever completely virtual fashion week for students’ designs. 

Catwalk 29 is a six-day event (running April 26 - May 1) with five shows featuring garments designed and produced by UNI students using  traditional,non-traditional and upcycled materials. Local high school students in the Cedar Valley also assisted in the production.

UNI to host virtual conversation with NBA championship coach Nick Nurse

The University of Northern Iowa, in partnership with the University of Iowa, will host a virtual conversation Friday with NBA coach Nick Nurse, a UNI Hall of Fame basketball star who led his Toronto Raptors to a 2019 championship.  

Nurse will discuss his rural Iowa upbringing, how he transitioned to find success throughout his career and the use of data analytics to drive decisions in the NBA. Iowa women's basketball coach Lisa Bluder, a UNI women's basketball standout and UNI Hall of Famer will host the virtual event from 2-3 p.m. April 25.

New UNI program expands community access to fresh-grown vegetables

A new University of Northern Iowa program will help aspiring gardeners start their own home garden at no cost to them.

Starting this spring, A Garden in Every Lot will provide new gardeners in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls metro area with site assessment, tilling, mulching and compost, and planting services as part of a multi-year effort by UNI’s Center for Energy and Environmental Education to improve community access to healthy foods.Garden installation
