Nearly 2000 first-graders locally and regionally will connect with the University of Northern Iowa College of Education as part of its 16th African American Read-In, which celebrates the literary works of African American authors and illustrators during Black History Month.
The University of Northern Iowa’s 11th African American Children and Families Conference will focus on "Embracing African American Children and Families’ Unique Qualities” as part of a virtual event on Friday, February 18, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“It is our belief that if we embrace and respect individual unique qualities that there will be a better understanding among people,” says Gloria Kirkland Holmes, UNI professor emeritus and conference coordinator.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa School of Music will hold its second annual New Music Festival March 10 to 12. The free public festival will feature guest composer and performer Molly Joyce, and accordionist Branko Džinović as well as UNI faculty and student performers.
A $300,000 grant from Waterloo Schools Foundation will fund the expansion of a thriving partnership between the Waterloo Community School District (WCSD) and the University of Northern Iowa (UNI).

TheatreUNI will present Dominique Morisseau’s “Blood at the Root,” directed by the UNI Department of Theatre’s first Visiting Artist-in-Residence, Margaret Kemp, starting March 2.
Choreography will be provided by Destiny (Tru) Cyrus and original composition will be provided by LYRIKALTMG.
Certain performances will be followed by an audience response discussion. Those dates are March 3, March 5, and March 9.
These performances will feature the UNI Opera Ensemble under the direction of Richard Gammon, director, and Korey Barrett, vocal coach, and will include the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra led by Erik Rohde, conductor.
UNI students said they are looking forward to returning to a more normal fall semester after enduring a year of restrictions and guidelines caused by COVID-19.
More than 3,000 students returned to campus housing this week, ready to start the fall semester. On Thursday, brand-new Panthers could be seen pushing in carts of belongings with their parents across campus. Some carried in a pet fish or even pool noodles to make bunk beds more comfortable.
