In conjunction with its 10-year anniversary, the University of Northern Iowa Center for Violence Prevention will be renamed the Patricia A. Tomson Center for Violence Prevention in honor of her decades of work on behalf of survivors of abuse.
A historic building and a center dedicated to preventing violence will be rededicated in public events at the University of Northern Iowa on Friday.
A rededication ceremony for the Nielsen Field House will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17 at the Nielsen Field House at 1400 W. 19th St. The event will include remarks by U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley and a performance by the Panther Marching Band.
Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) graduates seeking a bachelor’s degree through the University of Northern Iowa will now have one of the most affordable options in the state of Iowa thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines Catalyst Circle.
The University of Northern Iowa’s project to renovate and modernize the Industrial Technology Center received a $750,000 commitment from John Deere Waterloo, one of the largest recruiters of UNI Department of Technology graduates. The investment is the lead industry gift to date to the capital project.

The Pauline R. Barrett Charitable Foundation has invested $2 million in the renovation and expansion of the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.
“Pauline was known throughout the Cedar Valley for her philanthropy and volunteerism,” said UNI President Mark A. Nook. “During her lifetime, the university was fortunate to have her support for student scholarships as well as various capital projects across campus. UNI and the Cedar Valley are stronger because of Pauline’s transformational support of her community.”
