By anyone’s estimation, the recently deceased Vernon Jordan was a “mover and shaker.” A commentary on his life referred to him as, “a civil-rights leader, Washington insider, Wise Man, power broker, deal maker, rainmaker, Wall Street banker and, as an interviewer put it a few years ago in the Financial Times, ‘the most connected man in America (Peggy Noonan, “America Loses a Wise Man,” Wall Street Journal, March 6-7, 2021, A13).’” Whew!
For the second year, UNI’s celebrated the annual Student Leadership Awards with a four-part virtual ceremony. The ceremony, which runs from Monday, April 19, through Thursday, April 22, recognizes students from across campus for their contributions to key programs and campus culture.

At just 9 years old, Roshan Subba made the incredible journey from a refugee camp in Nepal to Des Moines. Though Subba has few memories of his time in the camp, one thing he remembers is watching other children practicing calligraphy. Subba dreamed of being able to create intricate art like that someday.

University of Northern Iowa won several awards for community engagement announced Monday.
A UNI professor who created a community project, a sophomore social work major who works with refugees and several UNI projects were among the five award winners recognized by the Iowa and Minnesota Campus Compact. The awards go to individuals and organizations whose accomplishments exemplify and celebrate the public purpose at the heart of higher education.

Catwalk 29 is a six-day event (running April 26 - May 1) with five shows featuring garments designed and produced by UNI students using traditional,non-traditional and upcycled materials. Local high school students in the Cedar Valley also assisted in the production.
