Celebrating Black History Month and 50 years of BSU at UNI

Black History Month 2022 is upon us, and this year is extra special because it coincides with Black Student Union's 50th anniversary at UNI.

Black Student Union (BSU) ushered in Black History Month last week with its annual kickoff celebration in Maucker Union. This year is extra special because it coincides with the 50th anniversary of BSU at UNI which will be a focal point of the celebrations all month long.  The diverse lineup of activities aligns with BSU’s vision to celebrate Black culture, speak on issues that are important to Black Americans and teach Black heritage. Community organizer, UNI instructor reflects on Juneteenth

With the passage of a long-awaited, landmark bill that made Juneteenth, which celebrates the emancipation of African-American slaves shortly after the end of the Civil War, a federal holiday, Inside UNI spoke with local pastor and instructor in the department of social work Belinda Creighton-Smith about the long-celebrated day. Creighton-Smith spoke about the role the murder of George Floyd played in increasing national attention on Juneteenth, the local celebrations planned and the racial issues in society that still need to be addressed.
