  Erin Brockovich, the internationally renowned fighter against environmental and corporate injustices, will visit the University of Northern Iowa for a public talk on Tuesday, Feb. 25 in the Great Hall of the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.   Brockovich’s talk, titled “The Power of One,” will focus on the importance of fighting for the truth. Tickets are free and can be picked up during normal business hours at any UNItix location.

  This UNI professor tackles the mainstream media’s coverage of the working class in his new book. Here, he answers five essential questions. Chris Martin has always been a news junkie. He grew up obsessively reading every newspaper and magazine he could get his hands on. That lifelong passion — and a critical eye Martin developed for how certain subjects are covered — has served him well as a professor in UNI’s communication studies department, where he regularly teaches classes on journalism and the media.

The University of Northern Iowa is hosting a mock caucus at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 in the Maucker Union Ballrooms, open to UNI students and the Cedar Valley community. Organized by the department of political science, the nonpartisan event will shed light on the purpose of caucusing and the importance of living in the first-in-the-nation caucus state of Iowa. Participants will be led through the processes that both parties use to conduct their caucuses and to tabulate and report results.

  The University of Northern Iowa was awarded $40 million in competitive research grants, notching a five-year high in the latest sign of the institution’s strength in scholarship.  It’s also the sixth highest amount UNI received since 1998. The grants awarded in the 2019 fiscal year, which ended last summer, will support 210 projects, the most since 2010.  Those projects include important educational work on Iowa air and water quality as well as training to help local school officials address students’ mental-health needs and prevent violence.

The University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art will present an art exhibition titled "Paper Giants," which will be open to the public from Monday, Jan. 13 through Saturday, Feb. 29. Paper Giants is an ongoing project between three artists: Ky Anderson, Meg Lipke and Vicki Sher. The artists met in New York where they live and work. They will present a public lecture on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. in KAB 111, and an opening reception will follow. Sponsored in part by the Florence Hartwig Foundation and in association with the UNI Printmaking Labs.

The University of Northern Iowa was recently ranked at the top of the annual Best College Food in Iowa by for the fourth time in five years (2016, 2018, 2019, 2020,) to go along with a national rank of No. 38 out of 1,385 traditional four-year colleges and universities.
