UNI NEWS SERVICES - The University of Northern Iowa is pleased to announce that graduate Cade Olmstead has received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program Award in philosophy for the 2020-2021 academic year. Olmstead, who received the award during his senior year double majoring in philosophy and sociology at UNI this spring, will travel to Slovenia this winter to study and conduct research at the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts and the University of Ljubljana as part of a project to study modern subjectivity and its relation to contemporary political discourse.

UNI NEWS SERVICES – The UNI Gallery of Art will present a Zoom session lecture at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30 by Dianna Clise, paper conservator from the Midwest Art Conservation Center (MACC). Clise’s lecture will highlight the conservation efforts behind seven works in the UNI Permanent Art Collection, including art from Grant Wood, Rembrandt van Rijn and Henri Matisse. UNI NEWS SERVICES - The University of Northern Iowa is partnering with the University of Iowa to bring a seven-week course to local innovators as part of a continued effort to build upon Iowa’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Venture School, a premier statewide program for entrepreneurs developed by the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (Iowa JPEC), is coming to Cedar Falls in October.

UNI NEWS SERVICE – The University of Northern Iowa’s Department of Languages and Literatures will host a virtual lecture as part of its 2019-2020 Hearst Lecture Series, titled “Borders/Crossings.” The upcoming lecture will feature guest speaker Luis Urrea, a Mexican-American poet, novelist and essayist.

Americans are facing an election year like no other. With COVID-19 still on the rise in many states, issues such as polling location safety and absentee ballots are rising to the forefront like never before. In Black Hawk County, the election will be overseen by Grant Veeder, who has served as the county auditor since 1988. In this conversation, Veeder, who graduated from UNI in 1974 and 1979 with English and history degrees, discusses what students need to know to vote this year and how the county is working to ensure a safe and fair election.

UNI NEWS SERVICES - The University of Northern Iowa today announced that the UNI-DOME will be open as an early-voting site for Black Hawk County residents. The university and the athletics department moved to consolidate early voting in one location to allow the campus and community to safely cast their ballot in a large indoor space while wearing masks and remaining socially distanced.

UNI NEWS SERVICES – The UNI School of Music will host a series of outdoor concerts on the UNI campus from Sept. 25 through Nov. 20, weather permitting.  “With indoor concerts and live audiences largely absent from the world at this time,” School of Music Communications and Operations Coordinator Caroline Francis said, “our ensemble conductors wanted to work to find a way to bring live music to campus this fall while offering the extremely important music education experience of live performance to our students.”  Events in the series will be as follows:

UNI NEWS SERVICES – "A Platinum Celebration" will be the theme of the 39th Annual Scholarship Benefit Concert, hosted by the UNI School of Music, celebrating the twenty-year-long collaboration with and success of the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. UNI NEWS SERVICES – Grow Cedar Valley and the University of Northern Iowa are teaming up with Cedar Valley businesses to host the Engage, Empower & Act 2020 Economic Inclusion Conference. This year’s keynote speaker is Kevin Warren, commissioner of the Big Ten Conference Attendees must register by Oct. 1.  for the virtual event, which will be held Oct. 8-9. The first day will include a two-hour session with speakers, breakouts and content that is open to all. The second day will feature a partial day conference featuring talented and engaging speakers.

UNI NEWS SERVICES – The Iowa Family Business Center is launching the new 2020-21 breakfast series season to help support and build the Iowa family business community.  The first session, “Take the "bored" out of your Advisory Board. How to create a Strategic Family Business Advisory Board,” will be held virtually from 8-10 a.m. on Sept. 18. Local business owners Mark Hanawalt, Jim Warner and Brendan Wall will discuss the role of a strategic advisory board and ways it can be critical in a family business’s ability to grow and transition from one generation to the next.
