UNI NEWS SERVICES - The University of Northern Iowa will host a health panel on the coronavirus featuring experts from the university and Black Hawk County Health Department in an effort to dispel myths about the virus and provide information to the community on how to prevent and combat its spread. The panel will be held at 3 p.m., March 11 in the Lang Hall Auditorium on UNI’s campus.

As part of a new collaboration between the University of Northern Iowa Art Department and the Hearst Center for the Arts, one UNI art alumnus will be chosen to join the new Visiting Artist Program at the Hearst.  The successful applicant will also receive a studio space at “The Red House Studios,” located on the Hearst property. Sponsored by the UNI Department of Art, the space will be awarded for free to the successful applicant for one year to further their artistic practice while living and working in the Cedar Valley.

The University of Northern Iowa Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is pleased to announce the department has received a $25,000 grant from the Iowa Space Grant Consortium, supported by NASA. These funds will support and enhance hands-on research opportunities for undergraduate students at the university. Specifically, the grant dollars will be used to increase the scientific return of research projects with the purchase of specialized equipment, including spectrometers and biosampling tools, along with the creation of new outreach opportunities for sharing the work.

More than 800 first-graders from Waterloo and Hudson school districts are expected to attend the University of Northern Iowa’s African American Read-In, which will feature an expanded slate of activities and for the first time send each student home with a book. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27 at the Maucker Union. The read-in is held annually in conjunction with the African American Children and Families Conference, slated for Feb. 27-28 at the college.

A new exhibit at the University of Northern Iowa examines the millions of ordinary people who witnessed the Holocaust, challenging the commonly held notion that its tragedies were perpetrated far from the view of ordinary citizens. The exhibit, “Some Were Neighbors: Collaboration & Complicity in the Holocaust,” will be on display from Feb. 16 to March 8 in the Learning Commons Exhibition Wall on the main floor of Rod Library.

The UNI Center for Energy and Environmental Education is teaming up with a number of other organizations to co-host the annual Local Food and Film Festival on Saturday, March 7. Held at the Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls, the Local Food and Film Festival aims to promote community and raise awareness around local foods, sustainability and environmental health.
