A group of UNI students is curating a collection of preserved crabs for the American Museum of Natural History in New York City that will help future researchers study the species and the human impacts on its habitat.
The Pauline R. Barrett Charitable Foundation has invested $2 million in the renovation and expansion of the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.
“Pauline was known throughout the Cedar Valley for her philanthropy and volunteerism,” said UNI President Mark A. Nook. “During her lifetime, the university was fortunate to have her support for student scholarships as well as various capital projects across campus. UNI and the Cedar Valley are stronger because of Pauline’s transformational support of her community.”
The University of Northern Iowa Community Music School will present Camp Musicmania at the UNI School of Music, Russell Hall on the UNI campus, from June 14-18, 2021. Camp Musicmania is a multifaceted fine arts camp whose primary purpose is to engage campers in the excitement of exploring music, drama, and art. This year’s camp theme focuses on different ways of creating music.
The younger age division (first through third grades, fall 2021) classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. daily. Cost is $142.50 per student.
Dazzling light shows, interactive video projections and audio feedback loops dotted the College Hill area last weekend with the debut of the first-ever Cedar Valley Illuminate Art and Light Festival. At just 9 years old, Roshan Subba made the incredible journey from a refugee camp in Nepal to Des Moines. Though Subba has few memories of his time in the camp, one thing he remembers is watching other children practicing calligraphy. Subba dreamed of being able to create intricate art like that someday.
Now, he’s a senior graphic design major at UNI and his first solo art show, “Modernism,” is being showcased through June 23 by Waterloo community center COR 220 East.
The University of Northern Iowa’s Textiles and Apparel Program will hold its first-ever completely virtual fashion week for students’ designs.
Catwalk 29 is a six-day event (running April 26 - May 1) with five shows featuring garments designed and produced by UNI students using traditional,non-traditional and upcycled materials. Local high school students in the Cedar Valley also assisted in the production.

The University of Northern Iowa welcomes the community to participate in a virtual panel discussion to address health inequalities in the age of COVID-19.
The colloquium, taking place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, will bring panelists from across UNI and the Cedar Valley community to discuss their research and professional experiences related to health inequalities and the COVID-19 pandemic.
UNI’s Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center will host a virtual sneak preview community screening of “Getting That Note Out” a new documentary film by UNI Associate Professor of Digital Media and filmmaker Francesca Soans, at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 9. The screening is co-sponsored by the North End Cultural Center.
