UNI Center for Violence Prevention to be renamed in recognition of Northeast Iowa couple’s gift

In conjunction with its 10-year anniversary, the University of Northern Iowa Center for Violence Prevention will be renamed the Patricia A. Tomson Center for Violence Prevention in honor of her decades of work on behalf of survivors of abuse.

UNI’s historic Nielsen Field House to be rededicated

A historic building and a center dedicated to preventing violence will be rededicated in public events at the University of Northern Iowa on Friday.

A rededication ceremony for the Nielsen Field House will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17 at the Nielsen Field House at 1400 W. 19th St. The event will include remarks by U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley and a performance by the Panther Marching Band.

UNI climbs U.S. News & World Report rankings

The University of Northern Iowa held steady as the Midwest’s #2-ranked public regional university while its computer science program, veteran-friendliness and overall value ratings increased substantially in annual rankings published today by U.S. News & World Report. 

The magazine grades universities on student outcomes, graduation and student retention rates, faculty resources, and student excellence as well as surveys of higher education experts, among other factors.

UNI again sees increased freshman class, record-high graduation rates

The University of Northern Iowa saw the size of its incoming class of first-year students grow for the second straight year, as well as all-time high graduation rates for its most recent graduating class.

This fall’s new freshman enrollment increased by 5% over last year to 1,554 students, and increased by 6% over the fall 2019 freshman class. The class of 2025 includes an increase in both Iowa residents and out-of-state students.

Concert series celebrating homegrown talent returns to the Gallagher Bluedorn

A concert series that started as a way to keep live music alive during COVID-19 will return this week to the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.

The Local Legends Series is a monthly concert series where favorite hometown acts will take to the Great Hall stage and perform concerts for a hybrid audience who attend in-person or virtually. The series will kick off at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9 with back-to-back performances by Amz and The Nitpickers. This free performance is open to both in person and virtual audiences.

UNI's Iowa Waste Reduction Center receives EPA Pollution Prevention Award

The Iowa Waste Reduction Center at the University of Northern Iowa was recently selected to receive an EPA Region 7 2021 Pollution Prevention Award. The award will be formally presented on Oct. 26 during ceremonies at the Midwest Environmental Compliance Conference.

UNI’s Educational Opportunity Center receives $520,000 grant

A University of Northern Iowa program looking to increase the number of adult participants in postsecondary education recently received a $520,523 grant to help them serve almost 2,000 students each year.

The five-year renewal grant will support the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC), which provides counseling and information on college admissions to qualified adults who want to enter or continue a program of postsecondary education. The EOC has received the funding since it was established in 1988.
